Galveston is located along the Gulf of Mexico just 60 minutes south of the Houston metropolitan area. The infamous Galveston causeway links the island to the mainland on the northwest end of the city, with a toll bridge on the western end of the island and the Bolivar ferry on the east end of the city.
Galveston is a small magical island, 32 miles long and less than three miles wide as its widest point, most known for its historic 19th century Victorian neighborhoods, small town southern charm, and the Seawall - a ten-mile long concrete barrier designed to protect the city from storm surge.
Tourist attractions include Moody Gardens, the Lone Star Flight Museum, “The Strand” downtown historic district, many historical museums and mansions, and miles of beach front. The Lone Star Flight Museum & Texas Aviation Hall of Fame house one of the finest collections of restored aircraft and aviation exhibits in the nation. Moody Gardens features a 1.5 million-gallon aquarium pyramid, a 3-D IMAX theater, tropical rainforest pyramid, an IMAX Ridefilm Theater, and one of the finest golf courses in Texas.
